New Media Occupation: Video Editor

In the digital age, video editing has become accessible to a much larger array of people than with analog film editing. With the installment of non-linear editing, video editors now have limitless reign in the realm of video editing. As a video editor, you are asked to compile numerous video files, audio files, video effect renders, music and still images, which are often out of chronological order, into one coherent story or sequence, using your video editor’s timeline.

Although being a video editor is extremely awesome, there are a lot of stresses that come with the job. The best editing in a video goes unnoticed. The editor must be aware of what cuts to make and where in order to progress the sequence in a manner that makes sense, but with subtlety. For example, if an audience member notices a jarring cut, such as a jump cut or flash frame, they are then distracted from the story, which is a party foul.

It is strongly recommended for video editors to have extensive knowledge within non-linear editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer or Final Cut, all of which are professional software used in contemporary major motion pictures.
