2D Concept Artist

I thought about choosing 2D concept artist would have been an interesting field to work in since I love drawing and sketching designs of characters and animals. However, I never really understood how difficult it could actually be. In the field of conceptual design, there are many different types of artists for different parts of the design process. For those in the 2D field, this number is very small and limited.
To understand the field, a 2D concept artist can work in fields like games, film, comics, or anything related. They work closely with the art directors and story boarders to create the basis for the overall work. They create the designs for the characters and environment that will affect the “look” of the finished product.
The concept artist has to make many deadlines, so they have to create quick, non-detailed idea sketches that relate to the concept of whatever idea is currently being discussed. The art that is produced can be made from any medium including traditional (drawings or clay molds) or 2D software (Adobe Photoshop). Whatever medium is used provides a demonstration for the producers, art director, and whoever else may be in charge.
This group of individuals has a tendency to work in small groups (2 to 10 people normally) as opposed to the hundreds of 3D artists who may reside in the same building. Because of this, the demand for 2D artists is very limited, but some consider the spot a “holy grail” among the jobs.

While the work may seem hard, I still would like to pursue such a job, especially if it means that I may be the one to influence the outlook or a particular movie or game. While I would be drawing according to the art director’s vision, I would still make some sort of impact on the design.
